East Brisbane Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) Assessments

Dyslexia | Dysgraphia | Dyscalculia

Receive a clear diagnosis with personalised support strategies

SLDs, or Specific Learning Disorders, are neurodevelopmental conditions that affect how people learn in areas like reading, writing, or math. Each person with an SLD has their own unique way of learning, which brings both special strengths and at times areas that may need boosting.

These disorders include dyslexia (reading impairment), dyscalculia (mathematics impairment), and dysgraphia (written expression impairment). Each presents differently in each person, making individual assessment and support essential.

Through our neuro-affirming approach, we see these differences not as deficits but as natural variations in brain function. With personalised support strategies and the right environment, individuals with SLDs can unlock their full potential in education, career, and life.

Let us help you or your loved one create a positive pathway forward that celebrates these unique learning styles while providing practical tools for success.

  • We assess for dyslexia (reading impairment), dyscalculia (mathematics impairment), and dysgraphia (written expression impairment) using comprehensive, standardised assessment tools.

  • Yes, we use a neuro-affirming approach that sees learning differences as natural variations in brain function rather than deficits. We identify strengths alongside challenges to provide a balanced understanding.

  • Signs include persistent difficulties with reading, writing, or math despite adequate instruction, avoidance of specific academic tasks, lower performance in one area compared to others, and frustration with schoolwork despite effort and intelligence.

  • Our assessments include intake sessions, rating scales, cognitive assessment, academic assessment, detailed feedback, and a comprehensive written report with recommendations.

  • Our comprehensive reports provide specific, actionable recommendations for educational accommodations and interventions. These reports can be used to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs), obtain exam accommodations, and guide teachers in implementing effective strategies.

  • We are located at 935 Stanley Street East, East Brisbane QLD 4169, with on-site parking and lift access.

  • Yes, with your permission, we can liaise directly with your child's school to explain assessment findings and recommendations. This collaboration ensures that appropriate supports are implemented effectively in the educational setting.

  • After assessment, we provide a comprehensive report with clear diagnosis (if applicable), detailed explanations of strengths and areas that may require support, and specific recommendations. We offer a feedback session and can provide ongoing support for implementing recommendations.

  • We create a calm and supportive environment with clear communication, flexible approaches, comfortable clinic setting, and regular breaks as needed. We understand that assessment situations can be stressful, particularly for those with learning challenges.

  • We understand that assessment tasks can be challenging and potentially frustrating for individuals with learning difficulties. We're trained to provide appropriate support, take breaks when needed, and adapt our approach to ensure accurate assessment while maintaining emotional wellbeing.

  • We focus on strengths-based reporting and emphasise that an SLD diagnosis explains learning differences rather than defining the person. We help individuals understand that identifying an SLD opens doors to appropriate support that can significantly improve learning outcomes.

  • The assessment involves multiple sessions including intake, cognitive assessment, academic assessment, and feedback sessions, scheduled flexibly to maintain focus and comfort. The complete process typically spans 3-4 sessions over several weeks.
